Floral medallions can be seen on many excavated objects and Dunhuang frescoes during the Tang dynasty, and can briefly divided into four categories: petal-shape floral medallion, highly decorative bud-style floral medallion, realistic lateral floral medallion and scenery floral medallion accompanied with birds, bees and butterflies. This piece belongs to the bud-style, which was classic during the high-Tang period.
