Period: Northern dynasties (386 - 581)
Medium: Silk
Dimensions: 40cm X 34cm
Introduction: In these two closely matched textiles, hexagons short of an enclosure are used to form S-shaped frameworks that are filled with quadruple-petalled petite flowers and fish motifs. Although small with repeats of only 1.8cm in the warp direction and 2.6cm in the weft direction, the design is refreshingly simple among textiles of the same period. The weave structure is a 1:2 compound tabby, with blue for ground and white, green and brown for figure, featuring alternating groups of green and brown warps that surface in different zones. (XZ)
