Embroidery is the handicraft of decorating fabric or other materials with needle and thread or yarn. Embroidery may also incorporate other materials such as metal strips, pearls, beads, quills, and sequins. Embroidery is most often recommended for caps, hats, coats, blankets, dress shirts, denim, stockings, and golf shirts.
Chinese embroidery has a long history, began as early as four thousand years ago in clothing embroidery embellishment. Women in the farming community are usually good at embroidery, with many ancient embroidery masterpieces remaining, as part of important cultural heritage.
The past dynasties witnessed the emergence of distinctive regional styles such as Suzhou embroidery, Hunan embroidery, Guangdong embroidery and Sichuan embroidery etc. From the beginning of 20th century, Chinese embroidery, as one of traditional Chinese arts and crafts, has frequently won prizes in the international expositions.
Chinese contemporary embroidery are still developing, surpassing any of previous period.
The exhibition displays more than 30 pieces of Chinese contemporary embroidery from Wenzhou Museum, masters of embroidery, local representative works and minority works.
